Godzilla Minus One, arguably the best movie of 2023, is celebrating its one year anniversary today since the movie released in US cinemas last December and by extension, South African cinemas too a couple of weeks later. The good news is that director Takashi Yamazaki is working on a new Godzilla movie.
Godzilla Minus One told a different kind of story that we’re used to seeing from the monster movie franchise. Set in the wake of World War II, Japan is still recovering from the devastation of the war when Godzilla appears to cause chaos. We follow the personal struggles of a kamikaze pilot who abandoned his duties, suddenly entrusted to take care of an orphaned child and a woman.
The officia plot synopsis reads:
“Feeling as if he unfairly cheated death too many times, Shikishima, a surviving Kamikaze pilot, is attacked on Odo Island along with many war plane engineers by a gargantuan monster. After the engineers die because of Shikishima failing to distract the monster, an overwhelming amount of guilt weighs on him, especially after a homeless woman and a baby move into his home when he returns. Shikishima, now on a personal mission, teams up with a large group of veterans to finally take down the monster known as Godzilla.”
There are a few ways you can watch Godzilla Minus One today. It’s currently available to stream on Netflix and digital stores.
The movie proved to be an enormous success financially and with critics, scoring a 99% approval rating on the review aggregate website RottenTomatoes. It went on to win the Oscar for Best Visual Effects last year, beating out The Creator, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. While Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer swept up the most awards of the evening, fans celebrated Godzilla Minus One as the first Godzilla movie in history to win an Oscar.
