Google Play Movies & TV App

Google is Removing The Play Movies & TV App From Android TV in October

On 5 October you’ll no longer be able to access the Play Movies & TV app on your Android TV device. Google is removing support for the app which allows users to rent and purchase movies and TV shows. Google is replacing the app with a simple new “Shop” tab.

This new Shop tab is where you’ll find all future rental content and view your existing purchases and active live rentals. Of course, you’ll still be able to view all of this in the Library section on your YouTube app too but for those who don’t use that tab, the Shop is the replacement for the Play Movies & TV app.

Google scrapping the app doesn’t come as a surprise. The company has been aggressively rebranding the Android TV platform over the past few years as it tries to transition all devices over to the Google TV platform instead. If you do have an Android TV device, it will support the latest apps and features but newer Google TV tech will come with all these new rebranded apps out of the box.

In the distant future, there won’t be any Android TV units available but Google is going to have a tough time rolling this out given how accessible Android TV is to develop for any hardware.

So in October if you’re looking to rent a movie, be sure to look for the new Shop tab on your Android TV. It will be used for all future purchases and rentals. It will also integrate into your Android experience without the need to open up a separate app. However, how Google intends to roll this out for older Android TV devices is still unclear.
