Gran Turismo 7 PS4 Version Will Ship on Two Discs

The PS4 version of the upcoming racer Gran Turismo 7 from Polyphony Digital will ship on two discs for its physical release next month. The PlayStation Direct listing for the game clearly indicates that it will have “2 discs”, while the PS5 version will only ship on one disc.

As reported by GT Planet, Gran Turismo 7 on PS4 will be shipped on two discs as opposed to one disc like its PS5 counterpart. Given the game’s high-quality visuals, this isn’t a surprise. One will likely be the install disc while the other will be the play disc.

An older PlayStation Direct listing revealed that Gran Turismo 7 will require at least 110GB of free space to install on PS4 too, making it one of the larger games that require a hefty amount of hard drive space to install and play.

Gran Turismo 7 isn’t the only game to have shipped on two discs for PS4. Previously, games like Red Dead Redemption 2, Cyberpunk 2077, The Last of Us Part II and Final Fantasy VII Remake all shipped on two discs for PS4, mainly due to their larger install sizes.

The reason why the PS4 version arrives on two discs as opposed to one disc for PS5 is quite simple. PS4 discs still used the standard BluRay format which had a maximum storage capacity of 50GB. The BD drive was popularized by the PS3, and Sony used this same disc for the PS4 as well.

Meanwhile, PS5 discs use the higher standard UltraHD BluRay, which is primarily designed for 4K movies. This brings its maximum storage capacity up to 100GB as opposed to 50GB like the standard BluRay disc. This means that Gran Turismo 7 would comfortably fit on one PS5 disc, but will need to be divided into two PS4 discs due to storage capacity.

Gran Turismo 7 launches on 4 March 2022 for PS4 and PS5.
