Grand Theft Auto 6 – 10 Things We Want in The Game

Grand Theft Auto 6 has officially been announced and for many, it’s probably the most anticipated video game of all time. After the record-breaking success of GTA V, it’s easy to see why. While the game is still a couple of years away from release, we’ve put together a list of things that we’d really like to see in the final product, from gameplay elements to world design choices. Here are 10 things we want in GTA 6.

Before we begin, we will not be taking into account anything already revealed in the leaks. Those leaks were from early development builds of the game and a lot could change from now until the final release. For the most part, the only thing we’re going on is the first official trailer and the tidbits of information we have on the game online.

10 Things We Want in Grand Theft Auto 6

GTA 6 PS5 Xbox Series X/S PC Rockstar Games

1. A Great Story

The storytelling of past GTA games, especially of the early PS2 era, were among the strongest in all of gaming. Our hope is that Rockstar Games returns to that strong narrative approach again with GTA 6, delivering a memorable story with unforgettable characters and plot beats. As great as GTA V was, it didn’t scratch that “great story” itch and we hope the same won’t be said about the next game.

2. Compelling Protagonists

GTA 6 will feature two protagonists in Lucia and her life partner-in-crime, who is rumoured to be named Jason. Clearly taking a few notes from the real-life Bonnie and Clyde, Lucia and Jason have the potential to be the most unique protagonists that we’ve seen yet in the franchise. Lucia might not be the first female protagonist in GTA (as the first GTA featured multiple playable female characters) but as a more defined character, there’s potential for her to become a standout in the series.

3. Links to the Original Vice City

We’re going back to the Miami-inspired location of Vice City for Grand Theft Auto 6. Being set in modern day, we’re a few decades past the glorious neon-lit 80s of the original GTA: Vice City but that doesn’t mean it should be forgotten. In fact, Rockstar is pretty good at linking the GTA games in clever ways. While GTA V didn’t have as big of a link back to San Andreas, we’re hoping that GTA 6 at least acknowledges the events of Vice City or its numerous memorable characters like Tommy Vercetti.

4. Satire/Social Commentary

Another thing Rockstar excels at is biting satire and social commentary in the Grand Theft Auto games, often reflecting the current state of the world while openly mocking the more ridiculous aspects of it. It just so happens that the last decade has seen plenty of dumb and amazing things happen in society – things that are ripe for GTA 6 to reference or make fun of. Judging by the trailer, the game is already aware of the insane news headlines about Florida so we’re happy with that.

5. Dense Open-World

The GTA series always tried to go bigger with each open-world and GTA 6 has the potential to be the biggest. GTA V‘s map is already a juggernaut in terms of scale but being inspired by Miami offers Rockstar more creativity to get diverse with its environments, from swamps to sandy beaches and sunlit coastal cities as inspirations. Most of all, it needs to not only be diverse but dense as well, packed with things to do and places to see to keep players invested.

6. Crazy World Events

On that note, GTA 6‘s open-world can also drop in some unexpected surprises along the way. Similar to finding a monstrously large alligator in Red Dead Redemption 2 (or the UFOs for that matter), GTA 6 can go just as crazy with its world events. It just so happens that Florida is the perfect setting to introduce all kinds of insane things without going into the realm of unbelievable. Well, let’s see if we run into an NPC suspiciously named Florida Man. We’d be terrified.

7. In-Depth Customisation

GTA V went above and beyond with the way you were able to customise the attire and hairstyles of all three playable characters so it’s only fair to expect something similar for Lucia and Jason in GTA 6. Hopefully this includes a long list of clothing brands and stores we can visit for some pretty in-depth customisation options.

8. RPG-Lite Stats

Taking the customisation a step further, we’d really love to see the RPG-lite stats from GTA: San Andreas make a return here. Rockstar mostly did away with it after San Andreas but being able to go to the gym, monitor your weight, increase your sex appeal and get proficient in all sorts of skills like driving and shooting made San Andreas really special. Rockstar will likely stick to giving its protagonists preset skills (like Franklin being good at driving or Trevor being good at shooting), though we’re still holding out hope for a bit more agency.

9. Romance

You can’t introduce a Bonnie and Clyde duo of protagonists without diving into the romance behind it all. If it’s just like reality, we can probably expect a lot of double-crossing, heated (or passionate) arguments and the protagonists trying to come to terms with how their criminal activities might impact their relationship. This gives us a good opportunity to explore Lucia and Jason on a personal level and see just how strong their bond really is when it comes to the pursuit of money.

10. A Killer Soundtrack

Last and certainly not least, let’s talk about the music. GTA: Vice City arguably had the best soundtrack in the entire franchise – an infectious mix of 80s rock, pop and club music that gave the game its unique identity. Returning to Vice City today, the hope is that we still get an assortment of songs that deliver a throwback to the 80s (like Tom Petty’s “Love is a Long Road” used in the trailer) while mixing the best of what modern music has to offer. Hey Rockstar, it’s about time you got The Midnight on your playlist.

As long as the GTA6 campaign has a decent amount of content and a decent soundtrack, never cared much for the online portion.
