Rockstar Games have already announced that they’re hard at work on Grand Theft Auto 6, the next mainline installment in the acclaimed franchise. However, fans have been left wondering about specific details related to the game’s development. A new report now suggests that GTA 6 will be using Rockstar’s own RAGE 9 engine, described as “ahead of its time.”
According to Rockstar Mag’s Chris Klippel (translated by TheGameSpoof), Rockstar will utilise the RAGE 9 engine for GTA 6. The journalist describes it as “amazing” and that we won’t be disappointed once we see the game. GTA V was built on a previous iteration of RAGE (or Rockstar Advanced Game Engine).

Klippel’s full tweet on GTA 6‘s engine reads:
“Of course, the new version of the #RockstarGames graphics engine (RAGE9) that will be used in # GTA6 will probably be amazing. I’ve been able to get some positive information and we really shouldn’t be disappointed. We are talking about an engine that will be ahead of its time.”
Rockstar Games confirmed that they were actively developing GTA 6 earlier this year, but stopped shy of giving any more details. Some reports indicate that the next game will take place across two time periods, while others state that we’ll be returning to Vice City and might focus on a new story and characters altogether.
Another report made by Klippel last month stated that development on GTA 6 had considerably ramped up, and an announcement could happen as soon as later this year. However, other insiders believe we’re at least 3-4 years away from the game being revealed in any capacity, especially given Rockstar’s lengthy development cycles (Red Dead Redemption 2 had been in development for over five years and released much later after GTA V).
Meanwhile, GTA V has received PS5 and Xbox Series X/S upgrades that are currently available to purchase and download.
