GTA 6 Trailer’s Tom Petty Song Surges 37,000% on Spotify

Rockstar Games recently dropped the reveal trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 which uses the 1989 song “Love Is A Long Road” by the late Tom Petty. Unsurprisingly, that song has now seen a massive 37,000% increase in popularity and plays on Spotify following the GTA 6 trailer’s release.

The song first debuted in 1989 from American rock artist Tom Petty, who sadly passed away in 2017. His legacy has been honoured in the first trailer for GTA 6 which uses one of his more popular songs titled “Love Is A Long Road” for its soundtrack (it’s very likely to appear on the in-game radio stations too).

As reported by IGN, Spotify noted that plays for “Love Is A Long Road” rose by 36,979% compared to this same time last week, no doubt owed to it being used in the GTA 6 trailer. Of course, this is only Spotify and there are numerous other music streaming services that might’ve also seen a sudden uptick in plays for the song. For example, the first search result for the song on YouTube (posted by the Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers channel) is currently sitting at 2.3 million views – over double what it was last week at 1 million views.

If there’s one thing that Rockstar Games always delivers in its Grand Theft Auto titles, it’s the soundtracks. The Tom Petty song is also a throwback to the 80s, making a direct connection to GTA: Vice City as the upcoming game will return to the Miami-inspired city in modern day.  Petty was also born in Florida, adding a more personal touch to the song’s usage in the trailer. The full playlist of songs that will be featured in GTA 6 has yet to be revealed and it’s unlikely we’ll know what it is until the game launches in 2025.

GTA 6 is set to launch sometime in 2025 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, though it probably won’t launch on PC until later.
