Meta has confirmed that development around the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR game has been put on hold indefinitely. The game was announced back in 2021 and was a collaboration between Meta and Rockstar. However, no footage or screenshots were ever shared.
The project was meant to be built for the Meta Quest platform. It would see the original GTA: San Andreas played from a first-person perspective in virtual reality. At the time, Meta and Rockstar claimed the game had already been in development for many years.
Meta has now stated that the project is on hold. If anything, the statement kind of sounds like it has been cancelled. A Meta spokesperson told IGN in an email the game has been “put on hold indefinitely”. It followed up by saying that Meta looks “forward to working with our friends at Rockstar in the future”.
Fans of the series were happy when Meta announced the project in 2021. It wasn’t the first time Meta and Rockstar teamed up to produce a game. The two studios developed LA Noire: The VR Case Files in 2017. Meta had also worked on porting Resident Evil 4 to VR. So the idea of GTA: San Andreas was exciting.
Sadly, it doesn’t seem like we will ever get to explore San Andreas in VR as CJ. There’s no word if the game will ever pick up development again but the current sentiment seems like a “no”.
At least we have other VR games to look forward to. Alien: Rogue Incursion was announced yesterday with an October release date. We also have the Batman Arkham Shadow game on the way.
