Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the third film in Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy series, has officially begun production. This news was shared by the film’s writer and director James Gunn, confirming their first day of shooting the anticipated MCU film.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was originally scheduled to begin production at a much earlier date, but complications due to the ongoing global pandemic had forced Disney and Marvel Studios to delay the project. Likewise, several upcoming MCU films had also been delayed, including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and several other notable releases next year.

Gunn, hot off directing this year’s surprisingly entertaining The Suicide Squad, returned to Marvel following a dispute regarding his social media history and alleged controversial comments. Gunn made peace with Marvel Studios and returned to direct the next instalment in Guardians of the Galaxy. Gunn shared a set photo along with a statement:
“It’s been a strange & long & at times challenging journey to get here, but the obstacles along the way have only made this moment more blissful. Back on set with my Guardians family for the first day of shooting.”
The third film’s plot is being kept heavily under wraps, though some speculate that it will feature the ultra-powerful figure Adam Warlock as one of the key characters (who was also teased during the end-credits scene for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2). Recently, The Maze Runner and Midsommar actor Wil Poulter was cast as Warlock, though his role in the film is also being kept hush-hush for now.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 currently has a release date of 23 May 2023, so it will be a bit of a wait.
