Guillermo del Toro, the director of The Shape of Water and Pan’s Labyrinth, has released the first trailer for his upcoming animated feature, Pinocchio. The trailer shows off the dazzling stop-motion animation utilised, along with narration by actor Ewan McGregor who will play Cricket.
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio will offer up a new take on a familiar classic tale. Judging by this trailer, it’s going for a darker tone while still retaining the magic of the original story. Del Toro will co-direct the film alongside Mark Gustafson, which is scheduled to hit the streaming service Netflix this December. It will also have a limited theatrical run in select cinemas this November.
The official description of Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio provided by Netflix is as follows:
“Academy Award-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro reinvents the classic tale of the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto. This whimsical, stop-motion film directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson follows the mischievous and disobedient adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world.”
Del Toro previously expressed his excitement tackling this “passion project” back in 2020, saying “After years of pursuing this dream project, I found my perfect partner in Netflix. We have spent a long time curating a remarkable cast and crew and have been blessed by continuous support from Netflix to quietly and carefully soldier on, barely missing a beat. We all love and practice animation with great passion and believe it to be the ideal medium to retell this classic story in a completely new way.”
The film will star big names such as Ewan McGregor, Ron Perlman, Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, Christoph Waltz and Tilda Swinton.
