Guy Turns Treadmill Into PS4 Controller so he Can Walk in Death Stranding

Electrical engineer Allen Pan created the ultimate walking simulator for Death Stranding and it is pretty genius. The project was taken after he looked for ways to stay fit while playing a game he was addicted to, Death Stranding. The aim of the video was to engineer the treadmill to the PS4 controller so it would detect when someone was walking on the treadmill and react in the way he wanted it to.

Much of the video shows the setup process for the entire project as Allen uses all sorts of programming techniques and chips to convert the treadmill to a PS4 controller. He also shows how he enabled the treadmill’s magnets to detect running and movement and how it converts that to the in-game movement. He also had to make sure that Death Stranding could detect running instead of walking.

In the end, Allen was able to set it all up but it did have its limitations. Of course, he still had to control the camera movement with a controller and Norman’s balance with the L2 and R2 buttons but I am sure if the treadmill had other buttons, he would have found a way to get it all set up to the device instead of using the controller.

Allen then asked some of his friends to have a go at the Death Stranding treadmill experience and it went quite well. Everyone started sweating within a few minutes of the test. Would this be the best way to play the game? Of course not but we have to respect his effort in trying to create a low-budget Death Stranding VR experience.

Still haven’t played Death Stranding? It is pretty cool. Check out my full review of the game here.
