A remaster of Halo: Combat Evolved, the first entry in the long-running Halo franchise, is reportedly in the works with a possible PS5 release on the table. The original game launched back in 2001 alongside the first Xbox console and it’s widely considered today as one of the best first-person shooter games ever made. If the new report is accurate, then it will be the first time that PlayStation players will be able to play a Halo game on Sony’s console.
The report originates from The Verge journalist Tom Warren, who wrote in his Notepad newsletter that Microsoft is apparently considering remastering and releasing Halo: Combat Evolved for PS5. It’s reportedly still in the “early days” of development so don’t expect any announcement to be made at this weekend’s Xbox Games Showcase.
Halo: Combat Evolved already received a remaster with the Xbox 360’s Anniversary edition, which was later upscaled again for Halo: The Master Chief Collection on Xbox One and PC. A new remaster could further update the game’s visuals and combat to bring it more in line with Halo Infinite‘s gameplay and aesthetic, if that’s the plan.
Halo: Combat Evolved largely focused on protagonist Master Chief’s adventures exploring an unknown ringworld overrun by The Covenant. He later discovers that there’s a mystery surrounding The Flood, a parasitic alien lifeform that could threaten the entire universe. Teaming up with the AI known as Cortana, Master Chief seeks to stop The Flood from spreading throughout the stars and thwart The Covenant’s plans.
In other Halo news, a 343 Industries job listing posted back in February this year revealed that an upcoming, unannounced Halo title will be accessible “for all players on all platforms.” There’s a good chance that this job listing is referring to the Halo: Combat Evolved remaster. Either way, it might still be years until we get any confirmation about it.
