The upcoming HBO series adaptation of Harry Potter might’ve found its actor for Severus Snape. Casting is officially underway for the new adaptation which aims to more faithfully adapt all seven books in the series unlike its movie counterparts which condensed most of the events from the books. British actor Paapa Essiedu is now reportedly in the running to play Severus Snape.
According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, Paapa Essiedu has apparently been offered the role of Severus Snape, though it’s not known if negotiations have begun yet. Essiedu is best known for acting in movies and TV shows like Black Mirror, Men and I May Destroy You. If he lands the part, he’ll be the first confirmed role for the HBO series.
HBO is currently in the process of hiring several roles for the upcoming Harry Potter TV adaptation. According to an earlier report, HBO is apparently looking to get Oscar-winning actor Mark Rylance, best known for Don’t Look Up and Ready Player One, to play Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts. The streaming service is still searching for its central trio of actors who will play Harry, Ron and Hermione.
As far as we know, the Harry Potter series will seemingly adapt one book per season, beginning with The Philosopher’s Stone for the first season. HBO is planning a ten-year run for the series which will be interesting to see how they plan on spacing out each season and how long it might take to shoot.
Former Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe previously revealed that he’s not interested in making a cameo in the upcoming TV series. After all, it wouldn’t make sense unless he’s playing a different character – that might be difficult considering most fans already associate him closely with the main character of the franchise.
