HBO has already renewed The Last of Us series for season 3 ahead of the release of season 2 this week. This makes sense after early previews and reviews revealed that the second season only adapts half of The Last of Us Part II video game, meaning there’s still plenty of story and good old revenge tales left to tell.
“We approached season 2 with the goal of creating something we could be proud of. The end results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals, thanks to our continued collaboration with HBO and the impeccable work of our unparalleled cast and crew,” said co-showrunner Craig Mazin, confirming that the show had been renewed for season 3.
Season 2 adapts only half of The Last of Us Part II video game whereas the first season adapted the entirety of the first game. This is expected as the game’s sequel is a pretty meaty experience with most players taking 20-25 hours to complete the story. This excludes completionist times which could easily take upwards of 40 hours, meaning there’s a lot of content to faithfully adapt in the series. Fortunately, season 2 of the HBO show is seven episodes long so we can expect more brisk pacing this time.
The second season picks up five years after the events of the first season and once again follows Joel and Ellie trying to settle down into a new life. However, tensions seem to arise between the two, leading to new friends and enemies making an appearance. Kaitlyn Dever has joined the cast of the new season as Abby Anderson, while Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey reprise their roles as Joel and Ellie respectively.
Season 2 of The Last of Us airs on 13 April 2025. The limited edition The Last of Us PS5 DualSense controller is also available today.
