Season 2 of The Last of Us series from HBO has debuted a new trailer as tensions rise between Joel and Ellie. The trailer also gives us plenty of action, promising death and destruction on the way with consequences for characters.
The Last of Us season 2 officially releases on 13 April on HBO Max or Showmax if you’re watching from South Africa. Building off of the events from the first season (and seemingly set a while after), Joel and Ellie fight for survival in a world divided and still suffering from a deadly outbreak. However, there’s more personal drama involved this time as tensions build between Joel and Ellie, promising emotional clashes.
Season 2 of the series mostly adapts the second game from Naughty Dog, The Last of Us Part II, though season 3 will also continue to adapt the events of the video game. Earlier this year, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann offered some new details on the upcoming season, specifically the decision to not let actress Kaitlyn Dever put on too much muscle for her role as Abby (who, in the video games, is quite muscular). They also confirmed plans to extend the story past season 3, which would be original content since the video game source material ends with the second game.
Unfortunately, those hoping for a third video game might be out of luck. Druckmann recently spoke to Variety, stating that a third game might not happen. ““I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us,’” he said during the interview. “This could be it.”
Developer Naughty Dog is currently working on a new IP titled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, which stars Tati Gabrielle (who also appears in The Last of Us season 2). The game will apparently be inspired by the classic anime Cowboy Bebop, but beyond a cinematic trailer, we don’t have any gameplay yet. It’s likely that the game is still a few years away from release, so we’ll have to wait to see more.
