HBO says that the viewership for the finale episode of The Last of Us Season 2 is down by 55% compared to the total viewers who watched the premiere episode back in April. The streaming platform confirmed the stats last night following the conclusion of the season in the early hours of Monday morning.
According to HBO, 5.3 million viewers watched the first episode of The Last of Us Season 2, but when it comes to the finale episode, that number dropped down to 3.7 million viewers.
HBO has blamed the Memorial Day holiday weekend for the drop in viewership. The holiday weekend took place this past weekend, and history has shown that Americans often tend not to engage in TV during these breaks.
According to Deadline, HBO says each episode of The Last of Us Season 2 amassed around 37 million viewers globally. The finale episode of the first season tallied 8.2 million viewers compared to the 3.7 million on season 2. However, viewing numbers will likely increase over the next few days.
The first season of The Last of Us has exceeded 90 million views in total since its debut back in 2023. Whether or not season two will follow the same trend is unclear at this rate. Regardless, the drop from 8.2 million viewers on the first season’s finale down to 3.7 million viewers does show that perhaps this latest season wasn’t as strong as the first.
