The Last of Us Season 2 Details Showrunners HBO

HBO’s The Last of Us Showrunners Reveal New Details About Season 2

HBO has revealed some new details about the upcoming second season of its live-action adaptation of The Last of Us. Unlike the first season which had a nine-episode run, season 2 will only feature seven episodes. However, the showrunners have assured fans that it they are “dense episodes”, some even including cut content from The Last of Us Part II video game.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly recently, The Last of Us showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann went into detail about what fans can expect from season 2. Firstly, the duo spoke about the decision to not let Kaitlyn Dever, who plays Abby, put on muscle for the role like her counterpart in the game, valuing her performance above her appearance. “We value performance over anything else,” said Druckmann.

“We need someone to really capture the essence of those characters… We don’t value as much, ‘Do they look exactly like the character with their eyebrows or their nose or their body?’ Whatever it is. It’s not nowhere on the priority list, but it’s below a bunch of other things that we consider,” he added.

Mazin doubled down on the fact that it will take multiple seasons to properly adapt The Last of Us Part II, giving fans an idea of where the second season could potentially end (and it’s not pretty). “I think it’s pretty likely that our story will extend past a season 3,” said Mazin. “How far past? I can’t say. And that’s not to say that there are not other stories that could be told, but this story is the one that Neil and I are telling.”

On that note, Mazin and Druckmann teased that the second season of The Last of Us will include cut content from the video game, specifically what was seen in the ‘Lost Levels’ added in The Last of Us Part II Remastered.

Finally, speaking about the length of the new season, Mazin said the seven-episode run will be tightly packed:

“Each episode is like a meal. You can have a light dinner or you can go to a 12-course French restaurant. We have seven episodes. They are high-calorie, dense episodes. If you consider action and drama and scope to be things that create an epic nature, each one of those episodes packs quite a wallop. You will not be bored.”

The Last of Us season 2 releases in April 2025.
