Netflix will be replacing Henry Cavill in the fourth season of The Witcher. Cavill is set to star as Geralt in the upcoming third season of the show. However, the Superman actor will then be replaced by Liam Hemsworth in season 4. Fans haven’t taken this news lightly and now reports claim that Henry Cavill left the show due to Netflix’s approach to the upcoming seasons.
Sources claim that the writers behind The Witcher show have actively disliked the books and the games. So much so that the unreleased future episodes of the show have deviated from the original source material which has caused friction with Cavill.
Last week, a writer for The Witcher Netflix TV show adaption, Beau DeMayo shared interesting information regarding the team behind the story. In an interview, DeMayo claimed that some of the writers were not fans of the source material. He said that some of the writers actively mocked the original The Witcher story which has gone against what he believed in. DeMayo was comparing his work on X-Men 97 where he insisted that all writers who worked on the project had to be a fan of the series. In The Witcher’s case, they weren’t.
“In fall of 2020, Marvel’s head of streaming asked me to develop a take to revive this show. From there I pitched it out, was hired. My LP was the first hire and he brought along all the amazing talent that followed. My general rule was you HAD to be a fan. No questions. I’ve been on show – namely Witcher – where some of the writers were not or actively disliked the books and games (even actively mocking the source material.) It’s a recipe for disaster and bad morale. Fandom as a litmus test checks egos, and makes all the long nights worth it. You have to respect the work before you’re allowed to add to its legacy.”
A few days later Henry Cavill announced his departure from the series. Fans now believe that Cavill’s exit is directly related to the comments by DeMayo. The Geralt star has been extremely dedicated to the show and has studied the source material a few times over. Fans believe that Netflix’s attitude towards The Witcher has forced Cavill to leave the show. They say that working with people who don’t care about the character or source material led to the decision.

Of course, Netflix has yet to comment on the speculation. Henry Cavill also announced last week that he would be returning as Superman in upcoming DC content. This undertaking could also be directly related to the exit from The Witcher. In a statement, Cavill said:
“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4. In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”
The Geralt replacement, Liam Hemsworth also released a statement expressing his joy for the role:
“As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”
The Witcher Season 3 is set to debut sometime on 2023.
