After previously (and ceremoniously) announcing his return to Superman in the DCEU, Henry Cavill has now confirmed that he will no longer be returning as the superhero after discussions with DC Studios co-runners James Gunn and Peter Safran. Cavill posted a statement on his social media announcing the sad departure from the character, which will apparently tackle his earlier years according to a new treatment from Gunn.
Cavill was first picked up as Superman in the 2013 film Man of Steel which kicked off the DCEU. Warner Bros. had a plan to build a cinematic universe that would’ve competed with the success of Marvel’s own MCU, which was then already a billion-dollar franchise. Cavill would later appear in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and finally Justice League before quietly taking on other projects.

In a statement posted to fans on his social media, Cavill shared:
“I just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran, and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”
As for the reasoning behind this, Gunn stated that they had plans to make a new Superman movie that will focus on Clark Kent’s early years, so Cavill wouldn’t fit the bill. As Gunn explains:
“Peter and I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year. Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.”
Thankfully, Gunn confirmed that this won’t be another origin story but he did state that he’d still love to work with Cavill going forward, just not as Superman – at least anytime soon.
