Looking for something scary to play? Well, these five best horror games will make sure you are running a sweat and perhaps even have a sleepless night or two.
Until Dawn – PS4
Until Dawn is one of the best games that the team at SuperMassive Games have put together on PS4 to date. It plays out like a cinematic experience with some heavy decision making and some rather gruesome kills. The game follows the story of a bunch of teenagers who return to the chilling Blackwood Mountain resort a year after a friend of their’s was murdered at the same place. The idea for their return is to pay tribute to the passing and use this opportunity to reconnect with each other.
What they don’t know is that there is evil lurking in the mountains as well as a mad serial killer on the loose. As you play through the game you will need to make decisions that will have an impact on the story, your character relationships, and if you are not careful the death of some too. If a character dies in the game then they are gone forever and the story ultimately changes too. Every step you take needs to be treated with the utmost care and the dangers that hide away in the darkness will be your end if you are not careful. Until Dawn is best played with a group of players as it is not only an epic game but makes for a great cinematic experience for the audience too.
Resident Evil VII: Biohazard – PS4, Xbox One, PC
Resident Evil VII: Biohazard was the reboot that the series needed. This FPS horror went back to the roots of the series and was all about gore, and that damn jump scares that brought out the worst in people. Resident Evil VII sees you take on the role of Ethan Winters as he searches for his wife Mia in the swamplands of Lousiana. Something strange is going on at the mansion and its surrounding areas as the Baker Family, residents of this dilapidated area are more than human.
Strange creatures and the family threaten your journey through the house as you search for your wife. Nothing is as it seems though with limited ammo, health, and realistic gameplay that makes Resident Evil 7 feel more horrific than ever. This is a true survival horror where you feel like a human and not like a mercenary, as you did in past games. Best thing of all is that the game is fully playable in PS VR, so you can really experience the scares.
The Evil Within 2 – PS4, Xbox One, PC
The Evil Within 2 is the sequel to the 2014 smash hit. Now it is pretty hard to release a new IP and make it a success but Bethesda killed it with this series, pun intended. The Evil Within 2 has improved on everything we loved in the series and yes, those black borders on the screen are gone too. This third-person horror takes place three years after the events of the first game and follows the story of Sabastian Castellanos as he continues to be haunted by the events of the past game.
Sebastian now needs to search for his daughter who was presumed dead. The game features multiple difficulty settings that will put you to the test like never before in the series. You will need to go easy on your ammo, items, and make sure you approach every horde of monsters with care not to be swamped by them and killed. Stealth plays a major role in the game as well as looting and crafting items to survive the nightmare. Let’s not forget the wide range of horrific enemies that will keep you on your feet as you try and stay alive and in one piece.
Friday the 13th: The Game
The best thing about Halloween is being scared together with your friends and the best game to do that is no doubt Friday The 13th. The game is a multiplayer take on the series where one player controls Jason Voorhees whose objective is to kill as many camp counsellors as possible. If you have not guessed it yet, the camp counsellors are other players. Jason has special abilities including being able to sense nearby players and teleport anywhere on the map. The other players now need to stay alive and complete five objectives that will allow them to escape from the camp to freedom.
Sounds pretty simple right? Well not really as Jason, the other friend of yours, will make it his life’s goal to kill every player at the camp so you will need to work as a team to get those objectives done and make sure are not seen or heard through the session. Sure, you could totally throw your friend under the bus by alerting Jason and running away, leaving your friend alone, but why would you? Or why wouldn’t you? Friday the 13th: The Game is a great party horror game not to be missed this Halloween
Amnesia: The Collection – PS4, Xbox One, PC
Free right now on PlayStation Plus, the Amnesia Collection packs all three games into one horrific experience. Starting off with Amnesia: The Dark Descent, this game was the original horror back in the day and I won’t lie, it made me cry. You explore a spooky castle as you avoid the light, the strange creatures that want to eat you alive, and try and escape to tell the tale.
Second is the sequel to the original game, Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs. This game puts you in the shoes of Daniel as he wakes up in a similar castle as before. The game follows the same outline as the original and has all the scares and heart attacks waiting. Last but not least is Amnesia: Justine. This expansion takes you through a series of sequences that have all been carefully crafted to scare the life out of you. For a pack that is free on PS4, and contains three games, I would say this should be on everyone’s radar play this month.
