The father of Final Fantasy, Hironobu Sakaguchi, was originally pegged to retire back in 2021 when Fantasian was set to release on Apple Arcade. However, while the game was planned as his last project, the master crafter went on to launch new projects at his studio, Mistwalker.
Following the launch of Fantasian Neo Dimensions, The Verge sat down with Hironobu Sakaguchi to discuss his career and what is next. Sakaguchi says that he indeed wanted to make Fantasian his final project. The director now wants to make another game in the same mold, which can be seen as a successor to Final Fantasy VI.
During the interview, Sakaguchi says that after wrapping up Fantasian Neo Dimension, he found it hard to part ways with the people that worked on the game. So instead of retiring, he decided to work on something new. Sakaguchi describes this new project as something that can be a “successor to Final Fantasy VI in a good way”.
He says this new game can be seen as something new and old at the same time. It will be “part two of my farewell note”, he claims.
Hironobu Sakaguchi is best known for creating the Final Fantasy series. The visionary was part of Square and Square Enix from 1983 to 2003. He left the company following the financial failure of the Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within movie.
Sakaguchi was part of multiple projects at the company, including Kingdom Hearts, and he was the creator of Blue Dragon and Terra Battle. He recently launched an upgraded version of Fantasian under the “Neo Dimension” name. This version includes ports for PC and console, along with various visual and audio enhancements.
