Despite the significant controversy surrounding Hogwarts Legacy, the game has broken records when it comes to concurrent viewers on Twitch watching a single-player game. Yesterday, 1.3 million viewers were online watching Hogwarts Legacy streams. The high viewer count comes from the game’s Deluxe Edition which allowed pre-order players 72 hours of early access before the standard edition launches on 10 February.
The Hogwarts Legacy Twitch numbers mark a substantial milestone for the platform. The last game to come close to these figures was Cyberpunk 2077 which peaked at 1.1 million viewers back in December 2020. Keep in mind other online titles such as Valorant and League of Legends hit above this figure quite often. In fact, Fortnite has even surpassed this number with 2.3 million viewers in June 2020. However, Hogwarts Legacy is the first single-player, offline game to achieve this peak.

Warner Bros. Games did plan a big celebration for Hogwarts Legacy on the early access launch day. The publisher was giving away Twitch Drops which included some late-game gear if the viewer watched 20 minutes of the stream. Sadly, due to some technical issues, most viewers who stayed for the entire stream ended up not getting their Twitch Drop anyway.
Streamers who have been playing Hogwarts Legacy on Twitch have also been forced to disable the chat feature. This is due to hate comments and trolling taking place on the platform. Many users are trying to boycott Hogwarts Legacy over its author J.K Rowling and her transphobic rallying. The author has made multiple comments in the past which spread transphobia in the community. She has also admitted to funding anti-trans campaigns using funds she makes from the Harry Potter series.
Although the author wasn’t involved in the development of the game, the public has voiced their opinions on the popularity and fame she gains from being the original creator of the series.
Hogwarts Legacy is now available for Deluxe Edition owners. You can read my full review of the game here.
