Hogwarts Legacy has a plethora of spells to enjoy, but none of them are quite as deadly as the Unforgivable Curses. In total, there are three curses to unlock: Crucio, Imperio and Avada Kedavra. Those hoping to gain these powerful dark spells early in the game will unfortunately have to work for it, though. Here’s a handy guide on how to unlock all Unforgivable Curses in the game.
First and foremost, Hogwarts Legacy players will need to advance through the story and meet the side character, Sebastian Sallow. If you didn’t join Slytherin, you’ll meet him in the first Defense Against the Dark Arts class. At this point, players will need to play a handful of main quests in order to unlock the first of many side quests where you can acquire the Unforgivable Curses.

Once players have gotten far enough into the main story of Hogwarts Legacy, a new side quest will automatically unlock called “In the Shadow of the Bloodline”. Meet Sebastian to trigger this quest. Once completed, a follow-up quest should soon pop up called “In the Shadow of the Study”. It’s here that you’ll unlock the first curse.
Crucio: During the quest “In the Shadow of the Study”, you’ll need to carefully pick your dialogue options when talking to Sebastian. He’ll begin talking about using Crucio. Don’t let him use it on you. Instead, choose to learn Crucio. Sebastian will teach it to you and you’ll unlock the powerful curse, which tortures enemies and causes them to take damage over time.
Imperio: Complete one more quest in Sebastian’s side questline to unlock the quest “In the Shadow of Time”. Once again, Sebastian will give you the option to learn Imperio. Choose this to unlock the curse. Imperio temporarily forces enemies to fight alongside you as companions. They’ll take reduced damage as a result.
Avada Kedavra: Finally, we get to the killing curse. Advance Sebastian’s questline again until you unlock the quest “In the Shadow of the Relic”. Once Sebastian confronts you, choose “Everyone should know about that curse” then “Yes, please”. This will give you the option to learn Avada Kedavra. Once unlocked, Avada Kedavra can be used to insta-kill enemies. It has a long cooldown, but it can be a pretty powerful spell, especially against tougher foes.
As a side note, if you’d like to sample the Unforgivable Curses before unlocking them in Sebastian’s story, you can do so in the Dark Arts Battle Arena. This will give you the chance to try out each curse. The battle arena is a pre-order DLC bonus. If you don’t know where to find it, check out our guide on how to unlock the Dark Arts Battle Arena.
