Warner Bros. says that a Hogwarts Legacy sequel is a major priority for the company. This is the first time that we’ve had confirmation of a follow-up directly from the publisher, especially in light of the first game’s enormous success which made it 2023’s best-selling game. A sequel to the game is expected “a couple of years down the road.”
Speaking at the Bank of America conference yesterday (via Variety), Warner Bros. chief financial officer Gunnar Wiedenfels spoke openly about the sequel to Hogwarts Legacy. “Obviously, a successor to Hogwarts Legacy is one of the biggest priorities in a couple of years down the road,” said Wiedenfels. “So there is certainly a significant growth contribution from that [games] business in our strategic outlook here.”
Job listings posted by developer Avalanche Software last month already hinted at a potential sequel to Hogwarts Legacy being in the works, though now it seems like we have confirmation that it’s on its way. Rumours dating as far back as September 2023 also claimed that a sequel was in the very early stages of development.
Hogwarts Legacy served as a prequel to the Harry Potter saga, set a century before the events of the popular books. Players took on the role of a fifth-year custom-created student who transfers to Hogwarts during a time of turmoil, the rise of dark wizards and a rebellion uprising brewing among goblins. Players could attend classes, learn new spells and take part in the daily activities of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Unfortunately, this didn’t include Quidditch.
Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported in June this year that some developers from Rocksteady were moved over to work on a director’s cut of Hogwarts Legacy after the underwhelming reception of Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. It’s unclear when WB Games plans to announce the director’s cut, though some fans suspect it will be revealed before the end of the year.
