HORI has announced a Nintendo Switch 2 camera that is small enough to be used both in docked mode and in handheld mode.
The new device, called the HORI GameChat camera can be placed on your TV stand by docking it into the included mount. It can then be removed from the mount and inserted into your Nintendo Switch 2 console by using the top USB C port. In addition to both modes, it can also be mounted onto the top of your TV thanks to the nifty screw attachment on the back.
HORI is the same brand that recently announced the cool Piranha Plant Switch 2 camera, which is up for pre-order now in South Africa, by the way. It seems the brand is determined to offer some great accessories that push the creative design of the Switch 2.
This HORI GameChat is super lightweight at only 30 grams. It is small and light enough to mount onto your TV and Switch 2 console without feeling too heavy.
Sadly, like the Piranha Plant the HORI GameChat does have a downgraded camera compared to the Switch 2’s official version. It is only 640×480. The Piranha Plant camera was 1280×720 while Nintendo’s official camera is 1920×1080. This means the HORI GameChat will have a substantial reduction in quality when using it in docked mode.
Nintendo does say that people can use any compatible USB C camera so you can likely get away with anything you already own. I am quite keen to see how cameras like the Logitech BRIO hold up on the console. However, the company says that some camera’s might not work “as intended”. So rather hold up buying other cameras until you can test what you have first.
The HORI GameChat Camera is expected to launch on 5 June. Right now, the listing is only available on the Japanese website but given how the other models are coming to SA, I am sure we’ll see this model for sale soon.
