Rumours about a potential remake or remaster of Horizon Zero Dawn first began in October last year before it was claimed that a studio other than Guerrilla Games was working on the project. Almost two years later, the ESRB has listed a rating for Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered for PS5 and PC.
As reported by Video Games Chronicle, the ESRB recently listed Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered for PS5 and PC, preceding an official announcement from PlayStation. The remastered version of the 2017 game was likely made to coincide with the launch of the Netflix live-action series which was unfortunately cancelled back in July when showrunner Steve Blackman, who also spearheaded The Umbrella Academy, was accused of making lewd, sexist, homophobic and transphobic remarks around the workplace.
Horizon Zero Dawn is already available to players on PS4 and PC, even receiving an official PS5 upgrade. The consensus surrounding this news seems to be mixed with many fans calling it a rather unnecessary remaster from Sony (following The Last of Us Part II Remastered). It’s especially bewildering now that the live-action series has been cancelled – at least with The Last of Us, you could make the argument that it was reaching modern audiences to co-exist with the HBO show.
The description for Horizon Zero Dawn reads:
“Experience Aloy’s entire legendary quest to unravel the mysteries of a world ruled by deadly Machines. An outcast from her tribe, the young hunter fights to uncover her past, discover her destiny… and stop a catastrophic threat to the future. Unleash devastating, tactical attacks against unique Machines and rival tribes as you explore an open world teeming with wildlife and danger.”
We still don’t know which studio will be handling the remaster, though now that we have an ESRB rating, we can probably expect an official announcement to happen sooner rather than later. Of course, Sony might push this remaster to the forefront of its PS5 Pro marketing too.
