House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones spinoff, has finally been given a premiere date, and will appear on screens on the 21st of August, 2022.
House of the Dragon is a prequel show that will focus on House Targaryen as they are the titular House of the Dragon in George R.R. Martin’s 2019 book Fire and Blood. The show will premiere on HBO and HBO Max on August 21st, announced by the company on Twitter, with the image of a hatching dragon egg.

All we know of House of the Dragon so far is that it is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and will focus on the clan of Targaryen. The Targaryens are known for their connections with dragons and are the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria, which we hope will get explored more in the show.
We have seen shows take artistic license with their reference material before such as The Witcher, so House of the Dragon could explore more regarding the dragonlords, the Targaryan Madness, as well as the Doom of Valyria. Perhaps we will also be treated to more dragon shenanigans including the near-wipeout of dragons from the Seven Kingdoms.

House of the Dragon was first announced by HBO back in October 2019 but it was only in October 2021 – a full 2 years later – that we got the first teaser trailer for the show. The trailer was notably light on plot details and we still have a very limited scope on what to expect from the show, other than the fact that it is based on Fire and Blood (the Targaryen house motto) and a whole host of speculation. Thankfully, we do not need to wait too much longer to find out.
House of the Dragon will premiere on August 21st which pits it directly against Amazon’s upcoming Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power which releases on September 2nd.
