In a recent Facebook conversation between CD Projekt Red and a fan, the developer was asked to give an indication of the difference in size between the Cyberpunk 2077 game world and that of The Witcher 3. Surprisingly, the developer gave a reply, and it’s an interesting one.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt launched with a massive map that included towns, cities, destinations to explore on land and water, and innumerable things to do. Add to that two expansions that were each the size of a game; Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. Playing through the Witcher 3 could easily take over 250 hours, and we know from earlier interviews with CD Projekt Red, that Cyberpunk 2077 is much more ambitious than Witcher 3, and that side quests will feel like complete stories.
The answer to the question of how big the Cyberpunk 2077 game world is when compared to Witcher 3’s isn’t a simple one. One reason is that unlike as in Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077 players will get quests and have the freedom to explore the many tall buildings in Night City. Here’s the full reply from CD Projekt Red’s Facebook post as shared on Reddit.
Night City holds 6 districts, but I can’t give you an exact number in square meters because no one counted this yet. Also, this is tricky for an urban environment – Night City has lots of buildings and these buildings have floors. You can have 120 square meters of space technically taking up to 60m2 meters of space. In a tall building, and we will have many of them explorable, each floor can house a lot of activities. Floors stack. The Witcher 3 was, in a way, much flatter – the activities were scattered. Here, the world can be huge, but it can be huge upwards or downwards.
The six districts are; the City Center, immigrant-inhabited Watson, upper-class Westbrook, suburban Heywood, gang-infested Pacifica, and the industrial section, Santo Domingo.
Mike Pondsmith, the man behind the tabletop games Cyberpunk, Cyberpunk 2013, Cyberpunk 2020, originally created Night City. As you probably know, he is also working on Cyberpunk 2077 as much of its world and lore stems from what he created. Night City is also known as “The City on the Edge of Tomorrow”, and was the brainchild of the fictional character, Richard Night.
According to rumours Cyberpunk 2077 is set to release in 2019, but CD Projekt Red has yet to announce the release date.
