For those of you who have managed to pick up a PS5 console and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, you will be happy to know that the shooter currently supports 4K 120Hz. What does that mean? Well, if you have a supported 4K TV with HDMI 2.1, you can run the game’s multiplayer at a crazy-high frame rate. However, it also means that users can enable 120Hz on supported gaming monitors too but this will only run at 1080p.
There’s a lot of confusion surrounding Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and its 120Hz mode. To be clear, 4K 120Hz is only available on specific TVs and monitors. If you don’t have the display to support this, you can use a monitor with 100Hz or 120Hz support and run the game at 1080p. You monitor needs to support HDMI as the PS5 does not have a DisplayPort.
Enable Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War 4K 120Hz Mode
Unlike other games on PS5 which automatically switches to 120Hz when you flick the switch in the options menu, Black Ops Cold War does not do this for some reason. Instead, users need to first disable ray-tracing then change the Game Presets setting in the PS5 system settings itself.
- Connect your PS5 to your 100Hz – 120Hz monitor or TV and make sure the 120Hz is enabled in the settings. Each display type varies in this regard.
- Load up Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War on PS5
- Head to settings while on the main menu
- Head over to “Graphics” and disable “ray tracing”
- Head back to the PS5 home screen and close the game
- Open the PS5 settings and scroll down to Save Data and Game/App Settings
- Select Game Presets on the left-hand side
- Change Performance Mode or Resolution Mode from Game Default to “Performance”
- Open Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and in the settings – graphics, 120Hz refresh rate is now enabled
- Keep in mind that the 120Hz is only available in multiplayer
If you are having issues, there are a few things you can try.
- Reboot the console after changing the PS5 Game Preset to “Performance”
- Make sure your monitor supports a higher Hz than 60. A simple Google search for your monitor model number can tell you this.
- Try a different HDMI port on your TV/Monitor. Keep in mind that TVs only have 2x HDMI 2.1 ports
