Reddit has become anti-X following Elon Musk’s Nazi salute gesture earlier this week during a Trump rally. Hundreds of communities have started implementing rules where users are barred from sharing X links on threads.
The bans span all sorts of communities from gaming, tech, cat lovers, to Nintendo, military, NSFW, F1 racing, and more. Communities have a strict “no X post” ban that is trying to redirect traffic away from X to other social media platforms. This means some communities are allowing screenshots of X posts on the platform but no hyperlinks at all.
The move has also been done by Reddit users themselves and not the platform. A spokesperson for Reddit says the bans follow the longstanding commitment to freedom of speech and freedom of association. So the platform has no intention of implementing the ban from a server side.
While Musk supporters have praised Elon’s gesture, calling it a “Donald Trump White Power moment”, many were shocked by it. Historians and various global organizations have confirmed that the gesture was indeed a Nazi salute. Elon hasn’t confirmed or denied the gesture. He says he is “sooo tired” of the “everyone is Hitler” attacks.
These bans on Reddit span millions of users. Even larger Reddit communities like NBA and NFL with 15+ million members have also considered implementing the ban. At the moment, it seems more and more communities are jumping on the bandwagon to cut off traffic to X.
