Last year, Warner Bros. confirmed plans to develop I Am Legend 2, a sequel to the 2007 post-apocalyptic thriller starring Will Smith. The sequel is now moving ahead at the studio with Smith returning alongside Creed and Black Panther actor Michael B. Jordan. Interestingly, the sequel will be inspired by The Last of Us.
According to Deadline, Warner Bros. has given the green light on I Am Legend 2 and it’s finally moving forward almost a year after it was initially announced. Producer Akiva Goldsman stated that the sequel will be inspired by The Last of Us, which recently exploded into popularity again thanks to the acclaimed HBO series. The show is based on the Naughty Dog game which follows a similar premise to I Am Legend about the world ravaged by a deadly virus (or zombie fungus, to be more precise) and follows people desparately trying to survive.

Goldsman talked more about The Last of Us being used as inspiration for I Am Legend 2, stating:
“I’m obsessed with The Last of Us, where we see the world just post-apocalypse but also after a 20-30-year lapse. You see how the earth reclaims the world, and there’s something beautiful in the question of, as man steps away from being the primary tenant, what happens? That will be especially visual in New York. I don’t know if they’ll climb up to the Empire State Building, but the possibilities are endless.”
Fans might be wondering how Smith could possibly return after his noble sacrifice at the end of I Am Legend. The sequel will instead use the alternate ending of the movie in which Smith survives the climax.
It’s not yet known who will direct I Am Legend 2 or who will star in the movie besides Smith and Jordan. The original movie was directed by Francis Lawrence who previously directed The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Constantine. He is also set to direct the upcoming BioShock movie at Netflix.
