I Am Legend, the 2007 post-apocalyptic thriller and box office killer, is returning after 15 years for a sequel. Will Smith will once again return to star in the film alongside Creed and Black Panther actor Michael B. Jordan.
Deadline recently reported that I Am Legend will be getting a sequel starring Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan. No director has been revealed yet, but Akiva Goldsman, who wrote the script for the original film, will pen the script for the sequel too. The original film was directed by Francis Lawrence, best known for directing The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Constantine.

The 2007 film adaptation was based on the 1954 Richard Matherson story about a man living alone in a world overrun by vampires. The film, however, doesn’t explicitly state that they’re vampires despite their aversion to sunlight. Instead, they’re seemingly more zombie-like than vampiric.
Interestingly, I Am Legend is famous for its alternative ending which showed Smith’s character surviving his confrontation against the creatures. However, the theatrical cut had Smith sacrifice himself as a hero.
With a sequel confirmed and Smith returning, it begs the question whether or not this alternative ending will be considered canon instead of the theatrical cut’s ending. Alternatively, Smith could simply appear during flashbacks or visions in the next film. His role in the sequel isn’t known yet, but we imagine Michael B. Jordan might step up to be the main protagonist due to his current star power.
I Am Legend managed to gross $585 million worldwide when it released in 2007, making it one of the year’s biggest movies. Smith’s appeal as an actor certainly contributed to its success, and with Jordan and Smith in the sequel, it will likely be a large success for Warner Bros. too.
