Ice Age 6 in The Works John Leguizamo

Ice Age 6 is in The Works According to John Leguizamo

Shrek isn’t the only classic animated movie from the 2000s getting another sequel soon, as Ice Age 6 is apparently in the works. This is according to actor John Leguizamo who voices the character Sid in the franchise. It’s unclear how this will work moving forward as Blue Sky Studios, the original animation company behind all the Ice Age movies, closed down in 2021.

As reported by DiscussingFilm, John Leguizamo recently spoke on an NPR podcast talking briefly about the Ice Age franchise. The actor mentioned that Ice Age 6 was in the works, though didn’t mention which animation studio would be handling it after Blue Sky Studios.

There are currently five movies in the mainline Ice Age franchise: 2002’s Ice Age, 2006’s Ice Age: The Meltdown, 2009’s Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, 2012’s Ice Age: Continental Drift and 2016’s Ice Age: Collision Course. A spin-off movie titled The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild was released in 2022, though it underperformed critically and commercially.

The main plot of Ice Age revolves around a mammoth named Manny, a sabretooth tiger named Diego and a sloth named Sid as they navigate the Ice Age and its eventual shift into warmer climates, seeking safety from the dangers of the world including dinosaurs and other dangerous mammals. The first Ice Age movie was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2003 Academy Awards but lost to Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away.

Blue Sky Studios, the animation company behind the Ice Age franchise and other animated movies like Rio, Robots and The Peanuts Movie, closed down in 2021 with its last animated movie being Spies in Disguise. The rights to the Ice Age franchise likely sit with 20th Century Fox and Disney by extension, so it will be interesting to see which animated studio Disney assigns to handle Ice Age 6.
