Ubisoft has reportedly cancelled a sequel to Immortals Fenyx Rising due to challenges around establishing the IP. Anonymous sources claim that Ubisoft originally intended to create a franchise out of the Immortals IP with each new game exploring different mythologies. However, a follow-up to the 2020 action adventure game is believed to have been canned internally as Ubisoft pivots towards its more prominent brands and franchises.
Sources told Video Games Chronicle recently that Assassin’s Creed Odyssey developer Ubisoft Quebec pulled the plug on a sequel to Immortals Fenyx Rising in its early development stages. Sources told the publication that doubts were cast on the Immortals sequel when Ubisoft began focusing more on its already established IPs such as Assassin’s Creed.

This comes in light of news reported back in January that Ubisoft had cancelled three unannounced games (Immortals sequel not included) in order to strengthen the development of its more notable IPs and brands including live service titles.
A report from earlier this month claimed that Ubisoft had a total of 11 Assassin’s Creed games currently in development including mobile spin-offs, VR titles, a potential remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and new mainline entries such as the feudal Japan-set Assassin’s Creed Codename RED and the mysterious Assassin’s Creed Hexe.
Despite Immortals Fenyx Rising eventually finding a decently sized audience and launching to generally positive reviews, the game’s success was mainly achieved through massive discounts and sales later down the line as well as its inclusion on subscription services such as Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus.
Fans are divided on the news of the sequel’s cancellation. Some believe that resources would be better spent on a sure-fire brand such as Assassin’s Creed while others think that Ubisoft simply didn’t give the IP enough room to breathe and evolve into something special that could’ve resulted in another popular IP for the company.
Immortals Fenyx Rising is currently available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC.
