Ratchet & Clank and Marvel’s Spider-Man developer Insomniac Games says it’s interested in turning its games and properties into movies and TV show adaptations again. This comes in light of longtime CEO Ted Price recently announcing that he’d be retiring from the PlayStation-owned company in March this year. Taking his place are three new faces which are quite interested in taking another crack at adapting Ratchet & Clank, in particular.
Ted Price will be replaced by Chad Dezern, Ryan Schneider and Jen Huang at Insomniac Games once he steps down in March. The trio will split various CEO responsibilities amongst each other, including doing a little bit of forward-planning for future endeavours. Speaking to Variety, the three were asked if they’d be open to doing movie and TV adaptations of their IPs. “I think back to the Ratchet & Clank film from several years ago. And we kind of got an early start on that. So, of course, we’re interested in that kind of thing. We love Ratchet & Clank in particular,” said Schneider.
Schneider is referring to the 2016 animated movie adaptation from Screen Gems. The movie bombed with fans and critics, garnering some of the lowest review scores of that year while also making only $8.8 million at the box office against its estimated $20 million budget. According to fans, the biggest issue with the adaptation was its dull writing which hampered an exciting, colourful group of characters from the video games while telling an uninspired story.
Given the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie – and Sony’s push into the film and TV industry via PlayStation Productions – there’s now an opportunity for Insomniac Games to right the wrongs of the past and make a better adaptation of Ratchet & Clank, though it might be a few years before we see it take shape.
