Insomniac Shifts Focus to Marvel’s Wolverine Development

With Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on the horizon and only over a month away from release, Sony first-party studio Insomniac Games is now shifting its focus over to the development of its next superhero action game, Marvel’s Wolverine. It seems like the anticipated sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man might already be in the final stages of polishing which is why Insomniac is moving over its resources to another familiar Marvel property.

Marvel’s Wolverine was originally announced back in September 2021 with a short teaser trailer but we’ve heard little to nothing about the game other than a report earlier this year which suggested that it’s aiming for a 2024 release date and might claim a Mature rating. We doubt that it will be ready for launch by next year, though Insomniac Games is easily Sony’s hardest-working first-party studio as it released three AAA titles in the last four years alone with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart and the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Speaking on Twitter, Insomniac senior cinematic director Tommy Mann confirmed that they’ll be moving over to Marvel’s Wolverine, which is a sign that development is practically complete on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 as the studio can start moving ahead with its next project.

Earlier this year, fans speculated that long-time Wolverine voice actor Steve Blum might be lending his voice to Marvel’s Wolverine again as he posted an Instagram video showing him in full mo-cap gear but couldn’t mention more due to signing a non-disclosure agreement.

In other news, Insomniac revealed that it had to remove the iconic Chrysler Building from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 due to copyright issues. Sony has also kicked off a rather strange marketing campaign in which it described Venom’s collector’s edition statue as “19-inches of Venom”, leading the internet to make a meme out of it.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launches on 20 October 2023 exclusively for PS5. Marvel’s Wolverine is currently in development.
