Instagram and Whatsapp to be Rebranded by Facebook

Facebook is planning some rather ridiculous rebranding to WhatsApp and Instagram in an attempt to make their ownership of the apps clearer.

In a statement to CNET, the social media company revealed they would be changing the names of WhatsApp and Instagram to “WhatsApp by Facebook”, and “Instagram by Facebook”.

The company states “We want to be clearer about the products and services that are part of Facebook,”. The rebranding does not end there as this new approach will see the app integrate together and show “new from Facebook” tags on the App Store as well as across the log-in screens.

Facebook is also looking to create a world where users can use Messenger, Instagram direct message and WhatsApp to send messages without ever switching between apps. But this is a plan we won’t see coming into motion for a while.

Much of this is due to users not knowing that who owns WhatsApp as a report claims that more than half of its users weren’t aware the chat app was owned by Facebook.

The Information, which reported on the rebranding a while back, claimed some of Facebook’s employees are surprised and confused about the upcoming change.

This change comes as the Federal Trade Commission is investigating the company over antitrust concerns. The FTC is looking into whether the company purchased Instagram and WhatsApp as part of a strategy to stifle competition.
