Apple has cooked up some smart AI battery-saving tools which are expected to arrive in iOS 19 later this year. The operating system update for iPhone devices is rumoured to feature the biggest design overhaul since iOS 7, and these battery-saving tools will piggyback off these changes.
Bloomberg reports that Apple’s new battery-saving approach will use data it collects from users in order to understand the trends and make predictions on how it should alter background processes and power draw depending on how the device is used.
It sounds very similar to Google’s machine-learning battery tools, which became available back in 2018. Essentially, it uses AI to understand which apps are accessed the most, which are rarely used, and which one the operating system should prioritise. The system then tailors an operating mode dependent on that user information.
It is unclear how advanced Apple’s battery-saving tools will be in iOS 19 and whether or not it will have any advantage or difference over Google’s. Given this feature is arriving much later than Android’s, perhaps Apple will make use of some other AI tools to improve the tech.
iOS 19 is also reportedly adding an indicator on the lock screen which tells you how long it will take to charge your iPhone depending on the current charge rate and power draw.
Apple is expected to release a thinner iPhone 17 Air device this year, which will likely trim down the battery cell in the device to make it thin and light. These new battery-saving AI tools will help improve the overall battery life of the device, so it makes sense that Apple wants to release them this year.
Bloomberg states that Apple will release these battery tools for all supported iPhone models and not just the rumoured iPhone 17 Air (if it is even called that).
