Actor Jake Gyllenhaal says “it would be an honour” to play Batman in a future DC movie. While Robert Pattinson is the current caped crusader in Matt Reeves’ The Batman saga, those movies are largely disconnected from the revamped DC cinematic universe being planned by James Gunn and take place in their own separate universe, leaving the position open to other actors for the mainline DCU.
Speaking to ScreenRant in a recent interview, Jake Gyllenhaal expressed interest in playing Batman. He called it a “classic” role that has been portrayed by “other incredible actors.” He briefly concluded by saying that “it would be an honour” to be tapped for a Batman role.
It wouldn’t be Gyllenhaal’s first brush with comic book movie casting either. Next to Tobey Maguire, Gyllenhaal was among the favourites to play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Sam Raimi’s trilogy, though the role ultimately went to Maguire. Gyllenhaal was considered again for a comic book movie, this time in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins. However, he would lose that role too to Christian Bale.
The actor finally landed a role in a superhero movie but it wasn’t as the main hero. Instead, he played the villain Mysterio in the MCU’s Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Gunn’s current plans for Batman in the DCU include The Brave and The Bold, which would be the dark knight’s introduction to the new universe. That role hasn’t been filled yet, so there’s a good chance that Gyllenhaal could be considered again.
In other news, Warner Bros. Discovery recently shuffled around its release schedule for The Batman Part II, pushing its release from October 2025 to October 2026. No reason was given for its delay, though it seems like we’ll just have to wait a little while longer to see the continuation of Reeves’ saga.
