Popular wrestler and actor John Cena has announced that he’s retiring from WWE in 2025, though he will continue to participate in matches throughout next year. The 16-time World Heavy Weight Champion pivoted to acting to expand his career, appearing in several Hollywood movies over the years including The Suicide Squad where he played Peacemaker.
John Cena announced his retirement from WWE on 6 July during a Money in the Bank premium live event in Toronto, making a surprise appearance at the show to a massive applause. Cena then confirmed that he will be retiring from wrestling in 2025, though later clarified that he intends on competing in at least 30-40 matches throughout next year until he officially steps away from the ring.
Cena stated:
“Tonight, I officially announce my retirement from the WWE. I hear a mixed opinion out there. Lots of questions, maybe, right?! Like, ‘Hey! Why here?’ And I want to talk about that here for a second. I want to talk about Toronto. Matter of fact, I want to talk about Canada. Matter of fact, I want to talk about Canadians.”
His “farewell tour” will run in 2025. Thereafter, he’ll retire from the ring but also expressed that he will still be involved in WWE in some capacity, perhaps as a producer. “I’ve always said to the audience that the WWE is my home and I love it,” he said. “Just because I physically feel I am at my end, it doesn’t mean I need to distance myself from something I love.”

Cena has a flourishing career as an actor, similar to former WWE superstar Dave Bautista. Apart from appearing in several comedy movies, he also made an impact on pop culture as Peacemaker, who also appeared as a guest character in the fighting game, Mortal Kombat 1, alongside Homelander and Omni-Man.
