Johnny Depp is done with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise for good, the actor stated recently during his defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard. When pressed about working with Disney again on the action/adventure series of films, Depp confirmed that he’s not pursuing it anymore.
During a cross-examination in the ongoing trial, Heard’s attorney asked Depp if he was really “out as Jack Sparrow”. Depp responded, “I wasn’t aware of that, but it doesn’t surprise me. Two years had gone by of constant worldwide talk about me being this wife-beater. So I’m sure that Disney was trying to cut ties to be safe. The #MeToo movement was in full swing at that point.”

Heard’s attorney pressed Depp again for a more definite answer, asking “The fact is, Mr. Depp, if Disney came to you with $300 million and a million alpacas, nothing on this earth would get you to go back and work on a Disney Pirates of the Caribbean film, correct?” Depp simply replied with, “That is true, Mr. Rottenborn.”
When the allegations first surfaced several years ago from Heard claiming that Depp allegedly abused her, the actor was pulled from several franchise films at the time, including Pirates of the Caribbean and Warner Bros. Pictures’ Fantastic Beasts series, where Depp played its central antagonist, the dark wizard Grindelwald.
Johnny Depp has taken his ex-wife Amber Heard to court now, citing defamation of character following the allegations, particularly following a Washington Post op-ed written by Heard in 2018 that seemingly dealt irreparable damage to his career. The trial is currently ongoing.
Disney is moving forward with a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie, which will instead star Margot Robbie. No release window has been given yet for the film.
