Joker: Folie à Deux is now officially happening. Early in June, we reported that Warner Bros was in pre-production for the Joker sequel but at the time, Joaquin Phoenix had yet to sign onto the project. We also reported that Lady Gaga was in the running to play a lead role in the film. However, her exact character was and still is a mystery. Warner Bros has now confirmed that Phoenix signed onto the project and will be returning as the Joker. In addition, Todd Phillips will return to write and direct Joker: Folie à Deux and also confirmed that Lady Gaga is indeed part of the movie.
Unfortunately, Phillips didn’t reveal what role Lady Gaga will play in Joker: Folie à Deux. Many believe she will take on the role of Harley Quinn. There are also rumours that the Joker sequel will be turned into a musical feature with “musical elements”. Again, neither Phillips nor Warner Bros have confirmed this news yet. If the Joker movie does end up being a musical, it would make sense to include Lady Gaga in the production.

Warner Bros also confirmed that Joker: Folie à Deux will release in cinemas on 4 October 2024 so we have quite a long wait ahead of us. While the original film was meant to be a standalone project for Todd Phillips, it proved to be a huge success. The original Joker movie received instant gratification with 11 Academy Awards nominations with the Phoenix winning Best Actor in a Leading Role.
According to Deadline, Joker: Folie à Deux will kick off production in December. Details on where the film will be based aren’t clear yet. We also practically know nothing about the plot or characters yet. However, the post shared on Instagram by Todd Phillips does give a little away. We see Joker dancing alongside a female figure. The words “Gaga” and “Joker” appear in the clip. My money is definitely on a musical film following the madness of Harley Quinn and the Joker.
Given the recent cancellation of the Batgirl movie alongside The Flash ending, Warner Bros is only spending money on films and shows that make them lots of dough. They know a Joker sequel will do just that.
