A Joker sequel called Joker: Folie à Deux has been announced and is now officially in the works. The film sees Joaquin Phoenix return as the infamous DC villain and the original film’s production team has mostly remained unchanged. Director Todd Phillips who directed and co-wrote the film movie is once again teaming up with co-writer Scott Silver on the project.
By the look of things, the script for Joker: Folie à Deux is already completed. Phillips shared a few images on Instagram of the script alongside a photo of Phoenix reading it. While plot details are basically nonexistent at this stage, Folie à Deux is described as a psychological disorder that affects two or more people.

The film’s name, Joker: Folie à Deux kind of gives us an idea that the sequel might revolve around another popular DC character as a key lead. Whether or not this is Batman or Harley Quinn is still unclear. Given that the Joker is somewhat dependent on his relationship with Harley Quinn and Batman, this mental condition has definitely confirmed that the film will focus on two leads.
The original film was released back in 2019 and was a massive success. Joker acts as a standalone story set outside of any Batman storyline. it follows the story of Arthur Fleck who slowly drowns in his own madness and becomes the Joker. While there were originally no plans to make a sequel to the film, Warner Bros. reportedly signed Phillips to develop one. Phillips then said he would not work on a sequel unless he could find some thematic resonance for it like the first movie.

Joaquin Phoenix also had no idea the studio was working on a sequel. The actor claimed there were more stories they could explore but he didn’t originally agree to explore them. Seems that has changed. Joker: Folie à Deux is now in production. No release window has been announced.
