Viewers all around the world can’t wait to sit down for four hours and watch the upcoming Zack Snyder’s Justice League cut. The film is set to release on 18 March 2021 on HBO Max. According to Warner Bros, other streaming services around the world are also set to debut the film. However, we have not heard yet how South Africans can tune in.

The film is the result of three years of work between Zack Snyder and the studio. This being after Joss Whedon released his original cut back in 2017 which was a complete trainwreck. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, it was made clear that Warner Bros knew that the original film was going to be a disaster. According to an executive who asked to be left anonymous, Whedon’s cut was a “piece of shit”.
When we got to see what Joss actually did, it was stupefying. The robber on the rooftop—so goofy and awful. The Russian family—so useless and pointless. Everyone knew it. It was so awkward because nobody wanted to admit what a piece of shit it was.
Sure, this is just one quote from the many execs that were part of the project but we finally have confirmation that Warner Bros was not happy with the film either. The reference to the Russian family and the overall damage the pointless plot points had on the film was clear from the get-go.
This further adds proof to the rumours that Warner Bros tried hard to make the film light-hearted and comedic. This was clearly to challenge Marvel’s brilliant writing in the ongoing universe at the time.
But there is light at the end of the tunnel in the form of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The film is not a comedy. In fact, according to Snyder, it is very dark. A complete opposite of Whedon’s attempt. We are also in for quite a long journey as the four-hour-long movie will properly introduce the characters.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair Snyder explained that the film would be impossible to showcase in two hours. He also revealed that he has never watched Whedon’s version either.
“How am I supposed to introduce six characters and an alien with potential for world domination in two hours? I mean, I can do it, it can be done. Clearly it was done. But I didn’t see it.”
Snyder also says that the reshoots and post-production that came with the Justice League cut carried a $70 million price tag. HBO originally wanted Snyder to release his cut, which initially had no special effects, music or any fancy post-production edits. This being after Snyder departed the project and took his laptop with contained the original, much-longer content. However, Snyder immediately declined. In the interview he explained his intentions saying:
I was like, ‘That’s a no, that’s a hard no… Here’s why. Three reasons: One, you get the internet off your back, which is probably your main reason for wanting to do this. Two, you get to feel vindicated for making things right, I guess, on some level. And then three, you get a shitty version of the movie that you can point at and go, ‘See? It’s not that good anyway. So maybe I was right.’ I was like, ‘No chance. I would rather just have the Snyder cut be a mythical unicorn for all time.’”
As a result of the expensive post-production costs, Snyder says he is forgoing his salary. He won’t be paid for the film whatsoever. Snyder claims that this move allowed him to keep his negotiating powers with the studio pretty strong.
