From Software parent company Kadowaka has confirmed that Sony is indeed in talks with the firm to purchase it. This follows earlier reports that were released this week where Reuters claimed the two were discussing a buyout.
Kadowaka released a statement addressing the rumours saying a letter of intent was sent from Sony Group Inc. However, there have been no other confirmed agreements at this time. Kadowaka says that should any progress be made regarding the matter, it will provide new information.
“There are some articles on the acquisition of KADOKAWA Corporation (hereinafter ‘the Company’) by Sony Group Inc. However, this information is not announced by the Company. The Company has received an initial letter of intent to acquire the Company’s shares, but no decision has been made at this time. If there are any facts that should be announced in the future, we will make an announcement in a timely and appropriate manner.”
Since the rumours went live, Kadowaka shares have surged with an increase of 40% in 24 hours. It is unclear yet whether or not the company will see this surge as a good sign. Keep in mind that Kadowaka says Sony submitted an intention letter which doesn’t mean talks are in place. This is likely the start of the acquisition discussions should they kick off.
While gamers are interested to see if Sony ends up owning the Elden Ring studio, the company’s intentions are more focused on the overall package that Kadowaka offers. The firm not only owns From Software but also Spike Chunsoft, ACQUIRE, Gotcha Gotcha Games and various anime studios and licenses.
Should the purchase take place, it would be quite a substantial move for Sony not only for gaming but anime and film too.
