Cyberpunk 2077 actor Keanu Reeves, who portrays the character Johnny Silverhand in CD Projekt Red’s open-world RPG, has now openly stated that he hasn’t played the game. In fact, he doesn’t really play video games at all, which contradicts what CD Projekt Red previously said about the actor not only playing the game, but apparently “loving it.”
In an interview with The Verge about The Matrix Awakens, Reeves was asked if he plays video games. The actor simply stated “no,” but was then pressed about playing Cyberpunk 2077. Reeves replied, “no, I mean, I’ve seen demonstrations, but I’ve never played it.”
Back in November last year, CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kiciński said that Reeves played Cyberpunk 2077 and loved it, which seems to directly contradict the recent comments made by the actor. Of course, we can chalk this up to developers simply drumming up a bit of hype around their game, and with a star as big as Keanu Reeves in the game, you’d naturally want people to think he played the game and enjoyed it. That said, CD Projekt Red faced a myriad of controversies surrounding the misleading marketing of Cyberpunk 2077 before launch, so this shouldn’t come as a surprise.
Reeves is set to star in the upcoming film The Matrix Resurrections, and appeared on The Verge to talk about The Matrix Awakens, an interactive tech showcase demonstrating the impressive power of Unreal Engine 5. The experience allows players to take part in an action sequence and freely explore a massive, fully rendered world that looks almost hyper-realistic in its presentation. It’s currently available to download on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available for PS4, Xbox One and PC, with free PS5 and Xbox Series X/S upgrades promised for early 2022.
