Guerrilla Games has made it clear that the Killzone series has been put to rest at the studio. The studio’s focus is now on the Horizon series as the games were seen as a refresh of the pallet and the opposite of Killzone.
Speaking to The Washington Post, Guerrilla Games’ art director Roy Postma says the studio was “done with it as a team”. Postma was discussing the upcoming LEGO Horizon Adventures game which is expected to release in November.
“As a studio, we needed to refresh the palette. It was, by choice, the opposite of Killzone. I think the themes that this story and the characters represent are relatable for all ages and people, like having a found family of friends and finding your place in the world.”
Guerrilla Games worked on the Killzone series from 2004 up until 2013. The series included five games in total and was released first on PS2, PS3, PS4 and included a PS Vita spin-off. The game was always seen as a visual benchmark for Sony’s consoles. Even the PS2 version included visuals we didn’t expect to see on the console.
However, Killzone: Shadow Fall was where the studio set the bar for visuals on the PS4. The game was a launch title on the original PS4 and its opening scene is still seen as one of the most striking concepts in gaming.
The Horizon series has been a success for Sony. It makes sense that the studio has pushed for sequels, remasters and updates. We know Horizon 3 is in the works alongside a live-service online game. Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered is also out soon.
We will likely never see a new Killzone game. If we do, Guerrilla Games won’t make it. I don’t think Sony will enlist a studio to remaster the series for modern hardware either.
