Larian Studios, the acclaimed developer behind Divinity: Original Sin and Baldur’s Gate 3, says its next game might release in 2029 but fans shouldn’t hold them to a date just yet. Patch 7 for Baldur”s Gate 3 seemed to be quite a substantial one for the award-winning RPG, though we also know that Larian is quietly hard at work on its next big project and it’s probably not DLC or a sequel to Baldur’s Gate.
Larian Studios head Swen Vincke mentioned during an acceptance speech at an awards ceremony in Malaysia yesterday that fans shouldn’t expect the developer’s anticipated next game until at least 2028 or 2029. Even then, Vincke added that fans shouldn’t hold the studio to a specific date. After the ceremony, IGN spoke to Vincke who casually said that it was a joke. “I knew you’d pick up on that. It was just a joke. I don’t know, we’ll release it when it’s ready. They’re big games and it takes time, so don’t hold us to a date.”
Back in April 2024, Larian confirmed that it was working on two new projects based on its own IP instead of the Baldur’s Gate/Dungeons & Dragons license, sadly meaning the studio has no intentions of making Baldur’s Gate 4. However, fans speculate that the developer could return to the Divinity: Original Sin universe and finally work on the long-demanded third entry in the RPG franchise – as it turns out, Larian also acknowledged that Divinity: Original Sin 3 will eventually happen one day.
As for any sort of continuation for Baldur’s Gate 3, we’re out of luck. Larian previously stated that it had no plans of producing DLC or a sequel to the Game of the Year winner. That said, the latest update for the game added over a dozen new evil endings as well as official mod support on all platforms, further increasing the game’s life span like Skyrim or Fallout 4 thanks to the modding community.
