A leaked unboxing of the Nintendo Switch 2 has revealed that the console is locked and useless until a system update is performed on the unit.
Someone who managed to get the unit early, and who is likely on Nintendo’s hit list now, says that when booting up the console, it starts up and goes to the home screen. However, when launching any game, it kicks out an error asking to update the system software in order to launch the application.
This follows up with our previous news yesterday where we shared that MicroSD Express memory cards won’t work on the Switch 2 without updating the console’s system software. Nintendo has listed on the console box that a system update is required to activate the card slot.
The latest update also backs up the previous reports that no review units of the Nintendo Switch 2 were sent out to press, media and creators ahead of the launch next week. This is again because the system simply won’t function without the day-one update, which of course, isn’t live yet.
Nintendo will likely turn on the Switch 2 servers next week around launch day as the company prepares for the midnight rollout of the system software. The launch is taking place on the same day globally so Australia is likely the first country to get the console.
In South Africa, you’ll be able to pick up your Switch 2 console on launch day. If you’re attending the midnight launch at the Nintendo Branded Store in Sandton City, you’ll get it at midnight.
You can watch the unboxing of the Switch 2 here (although, it isn’t really an unboxing, just some person opening the top of the box).
