We’ve all dreamed about wielding a lightsaber. These legendary weapons from the Star Wars franchise look awesome to duel with, thanks to the dramatic lights and sounds they make. And let’s face it, lightsaber duelling just looks so cool. People in France don’t have to imagine what lightsaber duelling is like, as they can officially practice it as a form of fencing.
The French Fencing Federation, which is one of the biggest fencing organisations in the world, has officially added lightsaber duelling as one of the recognised forms of fencing. Originally three forms of fencing were recognised by the French Fencing Federation, called epee, foil, and saber. Now lightsaber officially joins that list as a recognised form of fencing in France.
How Lightsaber Duelling Works
Firstly, the lightsabers that are used in this form of fencing are obviously only replicas, as even the movies’ weapons were just props, with the CGI effects added after filming. This form of lightsaber duelling uses polycarbonate replicas that light up with LED lights. Some nicer models even provide the iconic sound effects when two lightsabers make contact.
Two people participate in the match, with each round lasting 3 minutes. The opponents duel inside a marked circle, with different strikes carrying different points:
- To the head or body – 5 points;
- To the arms or legs – 3 points
- On the hands – 1 point.
The first person with 15 points, is the winner. If both opponents reach 10 points simultaneously, they enter a sudden death round where the first head or body blows, wins. It’s all intended to add to the drama of lightsaber duelling and to make it entertaining and visually awesome.

The French Fencing Federation is hoping that by recognising lightsaber duelling as an official form of fencing and equipping fencing clubs with lightsabers and trainers, is a great way to draw in a younger crowd.
With young people today… they don’t do any sport and only exercise with their thumbs. It’s becoming difficult to (persuade them to) do a sport that has no connection with getting out of the sofa and playing with one’s thumbs. That is why we are trying to create a bond between our discipline and modern technologies, so participating in a sport feels natural.
