Netflix is reportedly in talks to adapt the Baldur’s Gate video game series into either a movie or television show based on the IP. The streaming platform could be looking for its next big fantasy franchise after The Witcher and might be eyeing Baldur’s Gate, no doubt motivated by the success of Larian Studios’ popular 2023 RPG, Baldur’s Gate 3, which recently picked up Game of the Year at The Game Awards.
The report originates from Giant Freaking Robot, which has a mixed track record of leaks so we recommend proceeding with caution. According to the outlet, Netflix is supposedly in talks to secure rights to the Baldur’s Gate series, though didn’t mention if it will be adapted into a movie or TV show. The report adds that this project could open the door to potentially exploring more of the Forgotten Realms, the setting from the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop RPG, with opportunities to do crossovers.

Before Baldur’s Gate 3 became a success this year, Paramount Pictures had already produced its own Forgotten Realms-based project in the movie, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which starred Chris Pine and faired favourably with critics and fans. Netflix’s idea might be to explore potential crossover opportunities with the movie and its own Baldur’s Gate universe, though that’s just speculation on our part.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a deep RPG but also quite cinematic at points, making it ripe for an adaptation in another medium. That said, we recommend taking all of this with a pinch of salt until we get further confirmation or information from another source to corroborate this report.
The official description for Baldur’s Gate 3 reads:
“Gather your party and return to the Forgotten Realms in a tale of fellowship and betrayal, sacrifice and survival, and the lure of absolute power. Mysterious abilities are awakening inside you, drawn from a mind flayer parasite planted in your brain. Resist, and turn darkness against itself. Or embrace corruption, and become ultimate evil. From the creators of Divinity: Original Sin 2 comes a next-generation RPG, set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons.”
